Abstract
Born in 1981 in Uzbekistan, Saodat Ismailova portrays the spirit of Central Asia in her films and artworks. She is an important voice of the first generation of Central Asian artists to reach adulthood in the post-Soviet era. In her work she examines the rich, complex and spiritual culture of her native region. Weaving myths, rituals and dreams with everyday life, Ismailova subtial calls attention to societal issues such as the position of women and the disappearance of ecosystems.
This book accompanies the first major retrospective of Saodat Ismailova, presented at Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. This publication includes an interview with the artist Dina Ahkmadeeva and contributions by Erica Moukarzel, Yuliya Sorokina, Filipa Ramos and Marian Cousijn. This lavishly illustrated publication pays particular attention to the multitude sources and the archival material collected by Saodat Ismailova. (bron: backcover boek)
