Abstract
Not hierarchical, but democratic and anti-authoritarian – in its chronological development from 1967 onwards, Chris Reinecke's transgressive work, aimed at raising and expanding social awareness, is embedded in the student movement. At the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie, she developed her own approach early on in the field of tension between the extremely opposing poles of Gerhard Hoehme and Joseph Beuys. From 1968 to 1970 she worked with Jörg Immendorff and other members of the Lidl group on alternative models for learning, teaching, and working in society.
To this day, the precise, almost research-like observation of her surrounding social and political space, as well as scientific and cultural processes, is at the center of her work. The equally sensual and conceptual work leaves the viewer a lot of scope, meaning there is always an offering for one’s own movement, activity, and action.
In addition to paper collages, objects, drawings, and performance art relics from five decades, this book first and foremost presents the current work of the now 85-year-old artist and her paintings from the 1970s and early 1980s. These hitherto little-known examples of painting form an astounding missing link for the complete oeuvre as well as when viewing Reinecke's current, large-format, expansive paper collages, and it becomes clear how powerfully conceptual and painterly aspects interact.
