James Lee Byars

Published in conjunction with the exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca, the monograph delves into the artist’s practice through detailed entries on the works exhibited written by scholar Sarah Kislingbury, which contain a wide selection of historical images. . Along with a text by the exhibition curator, the volume includes: an essay by curator Jordan Carter on the relationship between Byars’ works and performance, a text by curator Alexandra Munroe on the artist’s correspondences in the context of the Fluxus aesthetic, and an essay by art historian Shinobu Sakagami on the relationship between James Lee Byars and Japanese culture. Completing the catalog is a text by artist Maurizio Nannucci—written in collaboration with author Gabriele Detterer—on his deep friendship and collaboration with Byars.
