Abstract
Poetry frozen in images—this is how one could describe the work of Sigefride Bruna Hautman (born in 1955, lives and works in Antwerp). Since the 1980s, she has been creating sculptures, reliefs, installations, videos, drawings, collages, and text-based works. Her work is resolutely figurative, oscillating between hyperrealism and stylization, legibility and symbolism, simplicity and complex layering. Hautman often creates series that echo and converge in content. Themes such as societal outrage, existential questions, and family or interpersonal relationships run like a common thread through her practice. She draws inspiration from the visual arts, literature, and music, with influences ranging from Giotto to Oskar Schlemmer, Samuel Beckett, and David Bowie, among others.
