CUJO, Issue 3: Jimmie Durham

'CUJO' was een tijdschrift dat uitgegeven werd door Edizioni Zero, gevestigd in Milaan, en waarvan er in de periode 2007-11 in totaal drie nummers verschenen. Het stelde zich voor als 'both a magazine and a guide to the imaginary and to the specific territory of the world of an artist, consisting of a special project done by him.' Het ging om een gratis magazine op telkens duizend exemplaren, waarvan elk exemplaar door de betrokken kunstenaar individueel behandeld en uniek gemaakt was. De uitgever noteerde als volgt: '"CUJO" explicitly commissions the artist to produce a sort of crafty "uniqueness" which consists of an inedited intervention based on the manipulation of the structural materials of the magazine (cover, paper, colours…). The artists invited to take part of "CUJO" are selected for the richness, density and singularity of their imaginary. Each of them is involved in the whole process of the project: from the idea to the production, and to the specific work on the magazine. Furthermore, each artist is asked to provide a list of personal places, spread around the planet that he loves and that, somehow, represent him. These locations, published in the last two pages of the magazine, become distribution points.' Het eerste nummer werd samengesteld door Nico Vascellari (2007), het tweede door Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2009). Het derde en laatste nummer werd door Jimmie Durham samengesteld (2011).

Het nummer van Durham steunde op volgend concept: '1000 magic items hold the world together. They are objects that probably no one would pay attention to: discarded, broken, forgotten or lost, mostly abandoned on the ground. Jimmie Durham has brought them together over the last forty years and sent them to CUJO. They were photographed, each one reproduced on a page and each was attached to a number, regardless of its size. CUJO is a publication distributed to 1000 people. Each holder of a CUJO by Jimmie Durham knows that - caring alongside other 999 persons - is holding the world together.' Durhams tijdschrift heeft door zijn omvang (1000 bladzijden), pocketformaat en kartonnen omslag veeleer het uitzicht van een boek dan van een regulier tijdschrift.

Het huidige exemplaar van Durhams 'CUJO' is onvolledig. Zowel het objet trouvé als de kartonnen box die het tijdschrift en objet trouvé samenhouden, ontbreekt. Het is niet duidelijk welk object oorspronkelijk was toegevoegd - mogelijk een witte plastic vork waarvan het handvat en ook een tand afgebroken is. Vgl. S0461_02.
